Introduction
The Sentence Game is an awesome online version of the party game Eat Poop You Cat. (This is just one of many names for the game, but seems to be the favorite over at wikipedia.) The basic premise of the game is that it is started with a sentence - the next player must draw a picture interpreting the content of the sentence. The third player, only able to see the second player's picture, must write a caption detailing the picture's content. This is then captioned, and pictured, and captioned again, until eventually the game is to a close. The full chain is then revealed to all participants, usually resulting in hilarity and embarrassment due to differing perspectives and interpretations.
Though a chain of Eat Poop You Cat can theoretically be as long as the players wish it to be, The Sentence Game follows two rules:
- Games are limited to nine steps consisting of four pictures and five captions: games start AND end on a caption
- Players may only participate in a given game once
The first rule is generally to keep the games short enough so as to make sure games finish regularly. The second rule is to prevent games from getting too stale and samey since a participant may recognize a caption or picture as being a reply to their own contribution, and their contribution will be biased by their knowledge.
History
The site started around Feburary 2006 by Eric "Abraxas" Montellese. Since then it has been gradually upgraded and developed, adding features, though the game remains the same at heart. This wiki was launched in Feburary 2007 with the intent of tracking and archiving interesting information that is not normally stored on the site itself beyond user comments.
TSG has always had (and probably always will have) a simple layout. This is due mainly to two reasons: 1) free time that Eric has to work on the site generally is taken up with the creation of new features and troll protections. 2) Just as a sentence game is pieced together by a group of friends, so should TheSentenceGame site feel friendly and pieced together. However, usability is key -- so users are always encouraged to add their suggestions on the bugs and features pages.
The site uses paid memberships, merchandise, and paypal donations to sustain itself financially.
A meme is a recurring depiction or phrase in The Sentence Game which is repeated because it is recognizable and a bandwagon (or herding) effect occurs. Memes are self-reinforcing because as they become more recognizable a user is more likely to reference them in their contributions. Memes originate as in-jokes and may be chosen for their comical nature, or perhaps uniqueness. Some memes are known as "forced" memes, whereby a single user or small collection of users repeatedly spam a concept in an attempt to achieve meme status.

The "Guide" section is a place to put any helpful advice or thoughts about the game. For example, help with various graphics programs, or advice on how to go about making a funny picture. Feel free to contribute your own guides.
The games that were the best - and why. Talk about your favorites, remember old games that have gotten buried in the archives, commiserate that you'll never be as good an artist as Svdl.
Who are these strange folks, playing The Sentence Game online? Don't they have better things to do? I bet you don't have anything better to do than to read through these profiles here on the Wiki.

a good idea! How about under the Favorites category?

Hey, would it be possible to add a section to the wiki for animations on TSG? IT could be a nice touch
No, haven't seen it since then. Probly was your web hoster.
Eric — 28 July 2007, 10:59
There was a short point yesterday where my web hosting service shut down the mysql server because someone else had overloaded it. That could have been related?
If only TSG made enough money for me to afford dedicated hosting!
Eric — 28 July 2007, 10:56
jchaulf -- I don't and haven't seen that -- is it still occurring? Was it a brief thing or did it last?
I get this when I go to the website:
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Unable to save result set in /home/emontell/public_html/php-bin/clsSentdb.php on line 167
error

Still having trouble? Shouldn't be...
...it's not letting me comment again. Lovely.
Seriously, this is getting a bit not fun. D: Could someone fill in a word for me in the bug reports? I shouldn't...not be able to comment D:
Since I can't really say anything anywhere else, it doesn't seem to be letting me make comments or vote. Is this a site-wide glitch or does the site hate me? D:

Sorry guys, it's up again -- we'll see how it goes!
Please do something to make it so we can play again! I'm REALY bored!
You coul atleast extend our membership for another week if you're not done with the moderation tools.
I hope it lets me post here...now that a lot of the guest memberships have expired, could someone please take off the block? It won't let me post this in the forum, so this is my last resort.
You can call trolling whatever you want but that doesn't make the incident worth telling much about :D
I see.
Evang: Trolling is a beautiful and mysterious art that must be told of. History for fututre lulz.
Eric — 24 May 2007, 08:40
You're not banned from the wiki - the whole site is members-only until I can improve the moderation.
Is there really that much to document in the first place, though?
"Trolls came, they screwed stuff up and made lots of references to penises like all trolls do."
Wow, I've been banned fom the wiki just for blanking my page and starting apge to document the trolls.
Something tells me that making it members-only is just gonna keep our problems away temporarily. Every site gets trolled, that's how the internet works. The only real way you could insure the site's non trollness would be to make all joining have to pay. But would it be worth it? By the way, I'd like to document this trolling.
Unfortunately, we don't get jackets.
I just don't think there's enough about it, though, unless we just did one big page involving all trolling incidents ever, which I'd approve of D: There haven't been that many.
We need pages telling the history of the raids.

check out the "wiki howto" links on the left sidebar for explanations of how to do wiki stuff if you get lost. It's a little bit tricky at first, but really easy once you get the hang of it.
I'm guessing there's something obvious that I've missed, but I can't figure out how to work this thing, or put up a profile or anything...can only certain people contribute to this? (By adding content, I mean?) I know I sound really stupid...just walking in here and being all "I don't get it", but I tend to be bad at figuring out this stuff.
Eric — 03 March 2007, 16:51
I agree, that's a good idea.
Maybe there should be a "Well Known Users" category.
Eric — 02 March 2007, 00:05
Actually, We have Joel to thank for that. As much as I'd like to take credit for the TSG banner, Joel is the accomplished artist who created it. I think the converstation was something like: "yeah, it should be kind of random and sketch-like." As to why a face, penguin, and toilet? I suppose Joel figured that they're all common in TSG artwork? :-)
I was actually really pleased the first time the "face->penguin+toilet" was used as a representation for TSG -- I think it's great. Anyone know what that first game was to do that?
Can we have a section describing the origins of "face->penguin+toilet=sentencegame"?

I love what you guys have done so far - keep it up!
